American Express® Business Gold Card Review

The American Express®  Business Gold Card is a rewards card that lets business owners and employees earn Membership Rewards points. The points can be redeemed for hotel stays or airline credits, or they can be exchanged for points with a variety of AmEx transfer partners. Other cards, such as the Platinum Business Card, offer increased point-earning potential but come with higher fees. If you prefer cash back or hotel-specific point systems, the American Express Blue Business and Capital One Spark Miles options, respectively, may better meet your needs.

American Express has earned a reputation for business credit cards that offer both substantial purchasing power and incentive structures that reward companies for everyday corporate expenditures. These cards carry higher fees than more competitive credit options from other major lenders, but they often bridge this gap with bonus rewards or cash-back offers. Most airlines, hotels and large-scale suppliers will accept American Express credit cards, but it’s worth noting that AmEx collects higher-than-average transaction fees from merchants.

The Essentials of the American Express Business Gold Card

  • APR: 15.74% – 23.74% variable based on creditworthiness, and will fluctuate with the prime rate
  • Annual Fee: $295
  • Primary Feature: 4x Membership Rewards point earnings across two spending categories of your choice
  • Introductory Bonus Offer: 35,000 Membership Rewards points if you spend $5,000 on eligible purchases within the first three months

What’s Interesting about the American Express Business Gold Card

The American Express Business Gold Card is primarily focused on earning your business Membership Rewards points, which can be redeemed for airline credits, used to pay down credit balances, or exchanged for other points with partner institutions.

Along with a 35,000 bonus point offer for new cardholders, the Business Gold Card lets you select two spending categories each billing cycle and earn 4x the rewards points, up to $150,000 combined spending. These categories include directly purchased airfare, U.S. advertising purchases in select media, U.S. gas station purchases and U.S shipping. All other categories earn 1 point per dollar.

This card also comes with an exclusive FedEx offer: if you spend $500 on qualifying services with FedEx in the first three months of card membership, you can earn $500 in statement credits. Other benefits include a 25% “airline bonus”: if you book air travel with Amex Travel using Membership Rewards points, you’ll receive 25% of those points back. The American Express Business Gold Card also provides access to both baggage and car rental damage coverage to help streamline business trips and reduce the impact of unexpected costs.

Things to Consider

The American Express Business Gold Card prioritizes points earning, but maximum points can only be earned in two categories per billing cycle. This requires you to estimate your biggest spend – and make adjustments each cycle if spending doesn’t line up with expectations. If category changes are overlooked or delayed, your business may lose out on substantial points accumulation.

In addition, both the baggage claim and car coverage programs come with specific requirements. For baggage, you must purchase the entire fare on your eligible Business Gold Card, while car rentals must be paid for in full, on your card, and you must decline the collision damage waiver at the car rental counter. As a result, you may be relying on coverage that isn’t applicable because purchases were paid via multiple cards or because you missed signing a specific form.

It’s also worth noting that all purchases under $100 must be paid in full at each billing cycle. You can choose to pay part of the balance, or the interest alone, for purchases over $100, but failure to pay for smaller spending in full will result in late payment fees of $39 or 2.99%, whichever is greater. This card comes with an average interest rate tied to the prime rate but also includes a penalty APR of 29.99% if you make 2 or more late payments in 12-month period, do not pay the minimum payment by the closing date of the current billing period or the next period, or if your payment is returned. This penalty APR applies for 12 months.

How to Get the Most from This Card

Getting the most from this card means understanding how your business spends and aligning your 4x points earning categories to these spending habits. Accomplishing this goal means monitoring business spend month-to-month and making adjustments where necessary to ensure that you’re getting the best return. While extra points are only accumulated up to $150,000 combined spending, there’s no limit to the total amount of points earned on your card.

Although rewards points are the primary feature of this card, it leans heavily toward travel incentives such as the ability to book airfare with points and earn 25% of your points back when you book flights through American Express Travel. If you have multiple employees traveling regularly and leverage multiple cards on the same account for the 4x airfare or gas station bonus, this card offers significant line-of-business benefits.
