The consumer banking arm of New York-based financial services giant Citigroup. Citibank has more than 1,700 branches and 5,000 ATMs. Citigroup says it has about 200 million customer accounts and does business in more than 160 countries. It had total assets of more than $1.9 trillion in 2012. Citigroup was one of the banks rescued by the U.S. government during the global financial crisis that began in 2008. It received $45 billion in loans and about $300 billion in guarantees for risky assets. Citi repaid the loans.
