Always be present

In a world that involves a lot of teleconferencing, Skyping and electronic interaction, it can be hard to stand out — even when face-to-face.

How many times have you sat in on a meeting where colleagues seemed more interested in their smartphones than the CEO?

This is not the way to stand out.

"Not being present and 100% in the moment while you're at work can make you seem disinterested to your co-workers and boss," says Allison O'Kelly, founder and CEO of Mom Corps, a staffing business in Marietta, Ga. "While it is impossible — and unnecessary — to separate work and life, it is important to be present, interested and on point in each respective arena."
