Where you can live for $2,000 a month

Seven bedrooms. A pool. Granite countertops. Even a doorman.

These amenities are included among the properties we found in eight major cities where you could live for a mortgage payment of about $2,000 per month.

Square footage and features differ, but here's what all the homes on our list have going for them: style and charm.

We looked for properties on the market for about $530,000 and figured the typical buyer would make a down payment of 20% — $106,000 — and finance the remaining $424,000.

If you took out a 30-year, fixed-rate loan at today's average mortgage interest rate of 3.52%, the monthly payment would be about $1,909, according to our mortgage calculator. The lower payment gives us some wiggle room to include slightly pricier homes.

But remember, the payment only covers principal and interest. We didn't look at property taxes, insurance costs or condo association fees.

Keep your eye on the price per square foot, a great way measure how much two thousand bucks really gets you in each city.
