7 unusual tax deductions

You can deduct the cost of putting your pet on a plane (or another form of transportation) if the trip is part of a work-related move.

"If you move due to a change in job, you are allowed to deduct reasonable expenses for moving (including) the cost of packing, crating and transporting your (pets)," says CPA Lisa Greene-Lewis. "(The deduction) is already in the tax code, but many people don't realize they can take it."

There are a few caveats to consider before claiming the deduction: Your new workplace must be at least 50 miles farther from your old home than your previous workplace, and you must work full-time for at least 39 weeks during the year immediately following the move.

The costs of relocating Fido or Morris are only deductible if the move is work-related and you’re claiming standard moving deductions on your taxes.
