8 smart moves to save on health care
Negotiate with health care providers
Don’t assume the balance due on your medical bills is set in stone.
According to Kevin Gallegos, consumer finance expert with Freedom Financial Network, discounts are commonplace, and medical billing offices are typically willing to cut prices up to 40% if the patient asks.
It’s more common for providers to issue discounts for uninsured patients or those with high-deductible plans. Your best bet for getting a price cut is to ask before the test or procedure is performed.
Gallegos has a couple of suggestions on how to phrase your request.
“Do you offer any discounts if I pay you directly today?” is one approach.
Or try: “Some of my medical providers offer a discount to self-pay patients … what is your policy on that?”
