Budget Bride Tip for June 16: Tie the knot on a Sunday
We’re celebrating the month of June with a daily tip from savvy brides who saved big bucks on the wedding of their dreams.
Michelle Anderson scored a $500 discount on her May 27 wedding reception in Grand Rapids, Mich., simply because it was on a Sunday.
“We wanted to get married quickly and didn’t have a lot of time,” says Michelle, 30, a nonprofit program specialist, adding that they hoped choosing an off day would allow them to snag a date in always popular May.
The couple went one step further, seeking the lower price on the Sunday of Memorial Day weekend, knowing most of their guests would be off the following day anyway because of the standard three-day weekend.
“I really expected them to not have the discount because of the holiday, but it was still offered, and it was offered across the board,” says Michelle, who married Jonah Anderson, 29, an addiction prevention specialist.
She points out that none of the venues advertised a discounted rate for Sunday weddings, but each one offered it when she asked.
Michelle and Jonah chose Mosaic Space, a newer venue in a recently gentrified area of the city, which for $2,000 gave them a package that included the space, a security guard, the DJ, two bartenders and cleanup.
The average cost of a reception location was $3,228 in 2011, and a DJ was $699, according to The Wedding Report, a wedding industry research company.
The Andersons’ Sunday wedding cost $16,000, far below the average of $25,631.
