AmEx credit card app serves up shopping deals

American Express has been pretty savvy about offering desirable discounts to its cardholders.

It also has led the pack of credit card issuers in using technology to pitch those discounts, using Facebook and Twitter to offer the deals.

Now it’s using the latest tech trend — the mobile app.

It just launched My Offers, a feature on its iPhone app to recommend relevant-to-you offers that will be blasted to you in real time, based on your past purchase history and your current location.

My Offers is still in pilot mode, so the recommended local offers are concentrated in Los Angeles and New York City.

However, AmEx users outside those two cities can still get in on the action with offers available at a few nationwide merchants such as Baskin-Robbins and Dunkin’ Donuts.

A typical offer is a "spend $10, get $5 back" deal. Use the card to make a payment, and you’ll get your rebate within three to five business days. You can sort the offers on your iPhone screen to view them by location or expiration date.

American Express sees My Offers as an up-and-coming competitor to daily-deal veterans Groupon and Living Social.

American Express wouldn’t say when the pilot program comes out of beta to go nationwide.

And unfortunately for Droid, Blackberry and Windows phone users, there’s no word yet on when My Offers will be available in their app stores.

You can follow on Twitter and Facebook.
