American Express is offering cardholders a $25 statement credit for charging at least that much to their credit card at a small business on Nov. 26, the Saturday after Thanksgiving.
While Black Friday and Cyber Monday tend to focus on large, national retailers, Small Business Saturday promotes local and independent options for holiday shopping.
To be eligible for the statement credit, you must register your card with American Express. You can also sign up on Facebook.
AmEx defines an eligible card as "a valid American Express Consumer Card or Business Card from American Express OPEN issued in the U.S...."
Prepaid cards (such as American Express gift cards) and corporate cards are not eligible, nor are ExpressPay transactions. Cards associated with accounts in default are also not eligible.
There is a limit of one bonus per registered card. In other words, if you spend $25 at each of three small businesses, you’ll only get one $25 statement credit, not three.
There appear to be few restrictions on the small businesses where you can shop to receive the bonus. American Express states, "Eligible small business merchants are independently owned small businesses located in the United States that accept the American Express Card. Purchases made at large or national chain stores, at franchised business locations and at government agencies are not eligible."
You can search for small businesses near you that accept AmEx cards through the Facebook page.
American Express says you’ll probably receive the statement credit within 5 days of your qualifying purchase, but it could take up to two billing cycles.
