Is a future collectible in your garage?
A 1967 Chevrolet Corvette L88 Coupe that cost about $4,400 when it was new fetched an astounding $3.85 million at an Arizona auction. We think that's a pretty good return.
Of course, most cars won't be worth anything like that 20, 30 or 40 years down the road, no matter how much money has been poured into their care and restoration.
But is it possible to predict which 2014 models might generate the kind of excitement and demand to make them a highly prized and valuable “collectible”?
We think a good place to start is Hagerty, a company specializing in insuring classic cars, trucks and motorcycles as well as publishing collectible-vehicle value guides.
Each year it picks the 10 new cars — and trucks — most likely to become collectibles.
The models on Hargerty's 2014 list range from a breathtaking 550-horsepower European sports car priced at nearly $100,000 to a four-door urban runabout that barely costs $20,000.
"For a car to be collectible in the future, it has to be cool right off the assembly line," says McKeel Hagerty, the company's president and CEO. "A collectible car has to grab you and not let you go.”

Generating 550 horsepower and leaping from zero to 60 in just four seconds, the F-Type R has a top speed of 186 miles per hour.
Hagerty says: The British marque makes a triumphant return to the sports car scene with the growling F-Type. Boasting a healthy V-8 engine and rear-drive platform, the F-Type will surely be a driving enthusiast choice soon enough.
There's not a more aspirational European sport sedan on the market. It's what other sports sedans want to be when they grow up.
Hagerty says: A performance-oriented sedan with an old-school manual transmission is quickly becoming an extinct species. While more drivers shun the thought of using three pedals, we applaud BMW for keeping this option alive in this segment.
With none of the frills or amenities of mainstream Camaros — such as a backseat — the race-engineered COPO version instead houses a roll cage. The first production unit was donated to charity and sold at January's Barrett-Jackson auction in Scottsdale for $700,000.
Hagerty says: Chevrolet basically guarantees future collectibility of the drag-strip-ready COPO Camaro by limiting production to 69 units.
Sprinting from zero to 60 in 5.5 seconds, the Ghibli S Q4 is a five-passenger, all-wheel-drive, midsize sports sedan.
Hagerty says: The Ghibli returns for a third time, and this time as a four-door. The twin turbochargers feeding the 404-horsepower, 3.0-liter V-6 ensure the Ghibli is more than just pretty curves.

About as long as a Mazda MX-5 Miata, this midengine, two-seat, 240-horsepower convertible will be available in the U.S. later this year.
Hagerty says: With a carbon fiber tub leading to a curb weight of just over 2,100 pounds, this sporty two-seater isn’t pulling any punches as it aims at the U.S. market.
Totally redesigned for 2014, the 460-horsepower Corvette can launch to 60 miles per hour from a standstill in about 3.8 seconds.
Hagerty says: The Corvette is the most popularly collected vehicle in the U.S. It is a nice mix of Corvette heritage with real-world performance figures and technology goodies. Dollar for dollar, this is the best performance buy on the market.
It's a beauty and corners like a go-kart, but when decked out in Nismo trim, the ride may prove a bit stiff for daily driving.
Hagerty says: The Nissan Z car has amassed a following, and the 370Z NISMO is the latest and greatest in this lineage. With Japanese cars now representing a stand-alone class of collectibles in a way that we have not seen in the past, 350 and 370Zs will not be ignored by collectors in years to come.
“Shaker” refers to the through-the-hood exposed air intake of this 376-horsepower, special-edition Challenger R/T. Zipping to 60 miles per hour from zero takes about 5.5 seconds.
Hagerty says: Dodge went back to the roots and added the iconic shaker hood atop a healthy HEMI engine and R/T options package. We will take ours in Plum Crazy Pearl.
A tricked-out version of this highly capable sport-utility vehicle, the Rubicon X offers a few additional standard goodies.
Hagerty says: Vintage SUVs are the fastest-growing segment and Jeep leads that pack. ... The Rubicon X is highly capable for not a lot of money. Many of these now compete at events, which means they will one day command respect at vintage off-road demonstrations.
The new-for-2014 Fiesta ST Hatchback boasts 197 horsepower from its EcoBoost four-cylinder engine and can sprint to 60 miles per hour in about seven seconds.
Hagerty says: Youthful buyers attracted to compact cars don’t always want to sacrifice performance. The Fiesta looks, sounds and acts the part of a modern-day enthusiast’s car.
