What you can drive for $23,000
Toyota Prius C Three
Mileage: 53 mpg city/46 highway/50 combined
The least expensive hybrid on the market, the Prius C hatchback is a smaller but still practical alternative to the original Toyota Prius. It's by no means the sportiest hybrid around, but you can't beat its EPA rating at this price. It uses a 1.5-liter gasoline engine paired with two electric motors and an electronic continuously variable transmission (eCVT) to maximize fuel economy. The Prius C is a few inches shorter than most compact gasoline-powered hatchbacks, but with comparable cargo space. The so-called Three version comes packed with high-tech features like navigation, a thin-film transistor (TFT) display that shows driver information digitally in lieu of traditional gauges, and a six-speaker audio system that uses Toyota’s Entune interface to access Pandora, Bing, real-time traffic and more. And with all the money you're going to save on gas, go ahead and splurge on the power moonroof ($850).
