Fun fuel sipping cars
Nissan Versa 1.6 SV Sedan
Mileage: 31 mpg city/40 highway/35 combined
Annual Fuel Cost: $1,500
Getting a full makeover last year, the four-door Versa is the most fuel-efficient on this list. Its conservative exterior styling won't win it any beauty contests, but we really like its tidy proportions that are ideal for slipping into those smaller parking spaces in downtown garages. Surprisingly roomy, its cabin easily seats four adults and five in a pinch. We give it high marks for its rear-seat legroom — four more inches than the Mercedes-Benz C-Class Coupe. It has more cargo room than the Mercedes, too. Thrust comes from a 109-horsepower, 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine and continuously variable automatic transmissions. None of Versa's trim packages overwhelmed us with their level of high-tech features, but the SV trim has all of the basics we looked for as well as an extra or two, like a height-adjustable driver's seat. Its audio system has four speakers, a CD player and an auxiliary input jack.
