Fun fuel-sipping cars
Mazda3 i Sport Sedan
Mileage: 28 mpg city/40 highway/33 combined
Annual Fuel Cost: $1,600
Great fun, a lot of standard features and 40 mpg on the highway make the Mazda3 i Sport four-door a shoe-in for this list. It features Mazda's Skyactiv-G technology that reduces the weight and boosts the efficiency of every powertrain component. The admirable result is a 2-liter four-cylinder engine that produces 155 horsepower — more than any of our other favorites — and a driver-shiftable six-speed automatic transmission that hustles the Mazda3 from 0-to-60 mph in well under 9 seconds. That's faster than any of our other favorites. Of course, it's the priciest one, as well. But we think it's worth the extra bucks, with a stylish, comfortable interior that features such goodies as remote keyless entry, 60/40 split-folding rear seat, tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel-mounted redundant audio controls and a four-speaker audio system with CD player, satellite radio and iPod interface.
