Costco offers discounts on GMC and Chevrolet trucks

For the next couple of months, a Costco membership can mean saving money on more than just oversized portions of household products, vitamins and foodstuffs.

You could haul all the loot from your next Costco outing home in a new Chevrolet or GMC truck.

Let's see, I'll take a 48-roll-count package of toilet paper, a 2-gallon container of dishwashing detergent, a 64-ounce jar of peanut butter, oh yeah, and a 2012 Suburban.

Between now and Jan. 3, 2012, Costco and GM are running a joint promotion exclusively for members of the giant warehouse retailer for deals on 2011 and 2012 Chevrolet and GMC trucks.

You can go to the Costco Web site ( and check out the details for yourself, but here are the highlights.

Members must register online or by phone to receive a PIN allowing them to purchase qualifying GM trucks from participating dealers.

Most GMC and Chevrolet 2011- and 2012-model-year light trucks are eligible, including Chevrolet's Silverado, Tahoe, Suburban and Traverse, and GMC's Sierra, Yukon, Yukon XL and Acadia.

The special GM truck promotion is actually an offshoot of a much more sweeping service called the Costco Auto Program.

Online, members can pick a specific vehicle to buy and the participating dealership they want to purchase it from. An associate from that dealership then phones the member to schedule an appointment.

The rest of the transaction follows typical dealership procedures.

Overall, the Costco Auto Program seems like a pretty smart way to avoid the hassle of negotiating.

Of course, if you are in the market for a light truck right now, the GM truck promotion's $500 gift card perk could come in handy this time of year.
